Box Score Steubenville, OH - After picking up their first win of 2015 yesterday, the D'Youville Women's Basketball Team was defeated by the host Franciscan Barons 74-62 on the second day of a back-to-back conference road trip.
After an Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) made jump shot giving D'Youville an early 6-2 lead, the host Barons picked up their offensive game by scoring 9 unanswered points. D'Youville regained the lead after a made basket by Awilda Murphy (Kenmore, NY/Sacred Heart Academy). However, Franciscan would take the lead back and hold it for the next 8 minutes.
A Bridget Andrews (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) made three-pointer gave the Spartans the lead back at 30-29 with 3:09 remaining in the first half. Two straight Jillian Piniewski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca) made baskets gave D'Youville a late spark, but Franciscan took the lead going into halftime by the score of 37-34.
Just over 5 minutes into the second half, Awilda Murphy tied the game up at 41-41 off a made free throw. Back-to-back three-pointers by the Barons gave the home team a 6 point cushion and propelled their offense for the remainder of the game. The closest D'Youville would get to the Franciscan lead was with 13:02 remaining on a Dannette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) made jump shot to cut the deficit to 4, but the Barons would then run away with the game winning by the final of 74-62.
Alexis Smith scored here season high in points with 20, which was also the team high. Smith also recorded 8 rebounds. Bridget Andrews and Amanda Marcely (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) both scored 11 points for the Spartans. Andrews pulled down 4 rebounds while also dishing 2 assists, and Marcely recorded 5 rebounds.
All five of the D'Youville starters had at least 4 rebounds and 1 steal, with each of the 5 scoring at least 1 basket.
The next game for the women is Wednesday, January 14th at home against Pitt.-Bradford at 6pm. The game is followed by the men's game at 8pm.
