Trailing early by the score of 10-3 with under 7 minutes gone in the first half, the D'Youville Spartan's offense started off much like the left the second half of their previous game. Slow. The Mounties began the second half by taking a 27-26 lead. Two Bridget Andrews (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) made free throws gave the lead back to the Spartans. After a Mount Aloysius made free throw, the Mounties opened up a 5 point lead with 13:41 remaining. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) tied the game on a made three-pointer, and then Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) made it 40-38 D'Youville. The Spartan offense once again put their collective foot on the gas pedal and capped off an 18-1 run with a Jillian Piniewski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca) made layup. From that point on it was all D'Youville as they won by the score of 61-50.
After two straight losses, third year Head Coach Dan Glover knew that this game meant a lot to his team.
"Today was a pride game for us. We were not happy with what we were doing as a team the first two games of the new year. Today, we got back to basics," said Glover.
As she has done game after game this season, junior Amanda Marcely led the team in points. With 18 points and 16 rebounds (also a team high), Marcely posted her ninth double-double of the season and her third straight. Four of the five starters for the Spartans were in double figures. Jean-Ann Korona and Alexis Smith both scored 10 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and had 3 assists. Korona led the team with 4 steals.
Freshman Awilda Murphy (Kenmore, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) had a solid all-around game. Grabbing 7 rebounds, scoring 8 points, dishing 3 assists and taking the ball away once, the freshman turned in a solid performance after her struggles last game. Sarah Marino and Jillian Piniewski both scored 2 points and recorded 2 rebounds off the bench.
Glover said his team "dug deep and played together as a unit" on the afternoon.
"Our next goal is to prepare for tomorrow and be 1-0 at the end of the day."
D'Youville has a quick turnaround as they will travel to Franciscan to play at 1pm tomorrow.
