Box Score Buffalo, NY - September 20th, 2014 - A historic day came Saturday afternoon as the D'Youville Men's Soccer Team captured their first win on their new field after defeating Alfred State 3-2. Not only was the game the first win of the season for the men, but it was the first win of Head Coach Brendan Murphy's collegiate coaching career.
The scoring opened up quickly as Alfred State scored 2 minutes into the game. Nine minutes later, freshman Alf Johann Egge (Stavanger, Norway/Stavanger) took a beautiful free kick from 40 yards out and curved the ball back post to even the score. Freshman Daniel Tarbell (Clarence, NY/Clarence) darted infront of the goalie as the ball reached him, providing a screen for Egge's shot to hit the back of the net.
Alfred State answered back 20 minutes later to take a 2-1 lead.
With nearly half an hour left in the second half, Tarbell helped create another goal for another freshman Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego). Tarbell headed the ball back to his teammate from a cross into the box. Pauly then took the ball and directed it into the back of the net to draw the score even at 2-2.
As the game looked destined for overtime, another freshman, Gerald West Jr (Buffalo, NY/Lockport), took a corner with his in-swinging left foot and dropped it in over the keepers head to take the lead, 3-2. West's goal, his first of the season, was a ball that couldn't be stopped and perfectly placed to the back post, where the goalie had no chance to stop it.
When the clock hit zero, the players gave Coach Murphy an ice bath to celebrate their, and his first win.
Murphy put it plain and simple by saying "that one felt good."
His team put together an all out effort Saturday afternoon as he said: "Everyone contributed. I am so proud of the team and the program."
The team's hard work hasn't gone unnoticed to Murphy, "We have worked incredibly hard for this moment and I just want the guys to enjoy it. This was a true team effort," he said.
On defense, freshman Conner Ward (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) was a standout, stopping Alfred State attacks again and again, playing strong on the back line. Freshman Mike Lekanka II (Newfane, NY/Newfane) was once again a model of consistency playing a solid game alongside Ward.
Coach Murphy knows that this was a special day, but there are bigger goals in sight, "We'll celebrate this historic victory for our program and go back to work early Monday to get ready for a very tough first opponent in Mt. Aloysius."
The win was the first of Murphy's collegiate coaching career.
The next game for the Men's Soccer Team is Saturday, September 27th at 4pm as they take on Mt. Aloysius at home for the team's homecoming game. The D'Youville Women's Soccer Team plays before the men at 2pm, also against Mt. Aloysius.
