Women Take Winning Record on the Road, Get First Conference Win

Box Score

Erie, PA - The D'Youville Women's Basketball Team headed down to Erie on Wednesday evening to tip off their 2014-15 conference season and defeated the host Penn St-Behrend 75-63.

The two teams started out the game playing a close first half up until there were 7 minutes remaining with the score tied at 18. After that mark, D'Youville went on a 13-2 run to take a 31-20 lead with 3:05 left in the first half of play. After the first 20 minutes of the game, the Spartans took a 37-23 into the locker room.

Picking up where they left off in the first half, D'Youville jumped out to a 46-25 lead just under 3 minutes in. The rest of the second half went in similar fashion as D'Youville didn't trail the entire game and closed out their first conference win of the season with the final score of 75-63.

Despite it being the first conference game of the season, Head Coach Dan Glover knows that a win like this early in the season goes a long way. "Any conference win is big. If we are going to get where we want to be as a team, we need to build on wins like this," said Glover.

For the second straight game, sophomore Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) set a career high in points. After a 21 point performance on Sunday against SUNY Canton, Korona topped that by scoring 22 against the Lions on Wednesday. Korona had an impressive stat line for the game by not only leading the team in points, but as well as assists (7), tied for team lead in steals (3) and second on the team in rebounds (7).

"Alyssa Donnelly (Alden, NY/Nardin Academy) played well for us in her time on the court today," said Glover. "Jean-Ann Korona, Bridgey (Andrews) and Awilda (Murphy) had nice games shooting."

Donnelly had 8 points off the bench, while Bridget Andrews (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) had 12 points. Andrews went 3-6 from three point land along with fellow Sacred Heart alum, Awilda Murphy (Kenmore, NY/Sacred Heart Academy). Murphy was second on the team with 14 points. Junior Amanda Marcely (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) once again pulled in a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

All 15 of the Spartans who made the trip to Erie saw action during the game. "It was great to get everyone on the court and some different faces stepping up," said Glover.

The next game for the D'Youville Women's Basketball Team is Saturday, December 6th against Pitt.-Greensburg. The game begins at 2pm in the College Center Gym.
