Box Score Morrisville, NY - Less than 24 hours after capturing their first home win of the season, the D'Youville Women's Basketball Team suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday evening to Morrisville State, 71-61.
Morrisville State came out strong to begin the game, taking a 14-3 lead halfway through the first half. D'Youville's offense began to come alive as senior leader Bridget Andrews (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) hit 3 three-pointers in less than two and a half minutes to make the score 21-19, Morrisville State. The Mustangs took a 30-23 into half as they began to pull away.
Trailing by 10 with 14 minutes remaining in the second half, D'Youville started chipping away at the Mustang lead. With just under 5 minutes remaining in the game, Andrews hit a three-pointer to bring the Spartans within 4 points as they trailed 53-49.
Morrisville State began to pull away until 1:17 left in the game when standout D'Youville forward Amanda Marcely (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) made a layup to make the game 63-59 Mustangs. The effort wasn't enough as Morrisville State pulled away to win the game 71-61.
Head Coach Dan Glover recognized there were some areas in which the team needed to improve upon. "We saw today we have some things to work on," said Glover. The third year Head Coach knows that the team has the opportunity to turn it around before their next game on Sunday. "I'm confident we will make the necessary adjustment and come ready to play on Sunday."
Marcely turned in another strong performance to start her D'Youville career as the junior transfer posted 21 points, leading the Spartans. Adding 11 rebounds, Marcely tallied her third double-double in 4 games and second in as many days. Andrews, D'Youville's captain, contributed 16 points to the team's total, 15 of which coming off of three-pointers. Also adding 2 assists, 2 steals and a rebound, Andrews turned in another all around game for the young season.
With a team high 6 assists, sophomore Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) contributed solid minutes to the D'Youville side. Korona added 3 points and 4 rebounds to her stats, playing 24 minutes in the game.
The next game for the D'Youville Women's Basketball Team comes after Thanksgiving break against SUNY Canton on Sunday, November 30th at 2:00 PM. The game will be followed by the D'Youville Men's Basketball game at 4:00 PM, also against SUNY Canton.
