D'Youville Downs SUNY Cobleskill to Win Opening Tournament

Box Score

Oswego, NY- After winning their first game of the season on Saturday, the D'Youville Women's Basketball Team followed up with a 58-40 win against SUNY Cobleskill to win the Max Ziel Tournament.

The two teams played a close first half with D'Youville edging the Fighting Tigers 27-24. In the second half, the Spartans turned it on for the second straight day. D'Youville outscored Cobleskill 31-16 to take the championship game 58-40.

"Its a huge accomplishment and a great overall team victory," said third year Head Coach Dan Glover. "I'm proud of my team for not putting their heads down, but remaining positive throughout the game."

Pushing the team to their second win in as many days were two veteran leaders of the Spartan squad. Senior captain Bridget Andrews(Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) and junior Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg)led the team with 12 points each. Andrews added 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists to go along with her 12 points. Having a strong game for a second straight day was junior transfer Amanda Marcely (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes). Marcely had 10 points to go along with 9 rebounds, 1 shy of her second straight double-double.

Both Andrews and Marcely were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Marcely being named Tournament MVP.

Coach Glover gives a lot of credit to his players coming through in the clutch when they were called upon. "I contribute strong leadership from our returners and new additions stepping up and giving us solid production and solid minutes," said Glover.

Making big contributions were also a pair of youngsters in the Spartan starting lineup. Sophomore Jean-Ann Korona(Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville)was strong on the boards, recording a team high 10 rebounds. Korona added an assist and 2 steals to her stat-line for the game. Freshman Awilda Murphy(Kenmore, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) chipped in with 10 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.

"We faced adversity both games this weekend and showed determination and will power," said Glover. Looking forward, the coach will look for three things that got the team off to a 2-0 start. "Remaining positive, working hard and getting better."

D'Youville defeated Oswego State on Saturday by the score of 67-61 to reach the championship game. Amanda Marcely had a double-double posting 25 points and 14 rebounds. Bridget Andrews had 11 points with 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

The next game for the D'Youville Women's Basketball Team is their home opener on Thursday, November 20th against Wells. The game begins at 6pm.
