Box Score Buffalo, NY - Freshman Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) sank a pair of free throws with 8.7 seconds left to get D'Youville past Hilbert 72-70.
The win moves the Spartans to 4-1 in AMCC play, good for second place in the conference standings, and 6-6 overall.
Sophomore guard Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/East) came off the bench to record a team-high 14 points and five assists. Laguerre did most of her damage at the free-throw line making eight of 13 attempts.
Overall the Spartans held a decisive edge at the charity stripe going 24 for 39.
Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) added 13 points and eight rebounds and Korona finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
"We got so many huge contributions tonight from different places," said D'Youville coach Dan Glover. "That was the difference tonight."
Casey Bartels (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) had her best game in a Spartan uniform with nine points, eight rebounds, and two assists. All were season-high totals.
The Spartan bench chipped in 28 points compared to just 10 from Hilbert's reserves. Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angles Academy) had a season-high six points and Jillian Piniewski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) added five points.
It was a wild finish to the game. Hilbert got to within two then forced a turnover and made a game-tying basket with 12 second to play, part of an 8-2 run over a minute and half. Korona was fouled well away from the basket and made two free-throws to put the Spartans up. Hilbert's final shot with two seconds left was off the mark and the Spartan's winning streak moved to three-straight.
D'Youville will host Pitt-Greensburg in the College Center Gym this Saturday (Jan. 11) at 3:00 p.m. an wind up their home stand Sunday (Jan. 12) at 3:00 p.m. versus Mount Aloysius.
