Box Score Buffalo, NY-In a contest that had the feel of a playoff game, the D'Youville women's basketball team defeated Pitt-Greensburg 67-60.
The win put D'Youville in a tie at the top of the AMCC standings with a 5-1 record. The Spartans are also 7-6 overall and have moved to the plus side of .500 for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) tossed in a game-high 21 points. Dougherty was 7-11 from the floor (2-3 from 3-point) and 5-7 from the free-throw line.
Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/East) continued her outstanding play and gave the team a career-high 16 points of the bench. The sophomore guard was a perfect six of six from the line.
Bridget Andrews (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) added 10 points and Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) went for 8 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.
The Spartans' defense was at their best today. Pitt-Greensburg was the AMCC leader in made three-pointers and were held to just 4 on 22 attempts (18.2%).
D'Youville led 21-20 at the half and a see-saw second half saw the teams battle to 6 ties and 6 lead changes.
The Spartans continually slashed to the basket and four times in the second-half converted old-school three-point plays (a basket and a foul shot).
