Spartans Roll Past Cazenovia by 34 Points

Box Score

Buffalo, NY- It was a complete performance today from the D'Youville women's basketball team in their 70-36 rout of visiting Cazenovia College.

The D'Youville defense limited the visiting Wildcats to just 24.2% shooting from the floor and forced 27 turnovers. Cazenovia's Kimberly Vrigian came to the College Center Gym with back-to-back 30-plus point games to her credit and was limited to just 8 points on 3-11 shooting.

A strong second-half offensive surge saw the Spartans score 41 points and shoot 44.4% from beyond the three-point arc.

Bridget Andrews (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) dropped in 15 second-half points and was a perfect 4-4 from three-point land in the final 20 minutes.  Andrews finished with a game-high 16 points and 5 assists.

Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) added 13 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) also scored 13 points.

The Spartans also got to the free-throw line far more than Cazenovia. D'Youville made 19 of 27 from the charity stripe compared to just 2 of 6 from the visitors. Cazenovia didn't attempt their first free throws until the 12:14 mark of the second-half.

The Spartans also received good play out of their forwards that neutralized Cazenovia's post players. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) grabbed 10 rebounds and recorded a game-high 3 blocked shots to go with 9 points. Jillian Piniewski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) grabbed 5 rebounds in 20 minutes of play and Alyssa Donnelly (Alden, NY/Nardin Academy) played a season-high 12 minutes and scored 3 points and grabbed 2 rebounds.

All 13 Spartans saw action today. Emily Carias (Eden, NY/Eden) scored her first career points with a free throw and a field-goal late in the game. Maria Rosati (West Seneca, NY/St. Mary's) made her first appearance of the season and delivered 3 points and 2 steals.

"Today's win started on the defensive end," said Head Coach Dan Glover. "The turnovers created led to scoring opportunities. We also did a great job moving the ball in the offensive end creating space for our shooters. We also got important contributions from our entire team today.'

The last time D'Youville held an opponent under 40 points was January 12, 2011 (77-34 win at Hilbert). Today's 34-point margin of victory was the program's largest since that 2011 game at Hilbert.

D'Youville begins the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference portion of their schedule on the road December 4 at Penn State Behrend. Start time is at 8:00 p.m.
