NCAA Recruitment Rules, Regulations & Penalties
All coaches, Athletics Department staff members, and student-athletes are required to follow the NCAA Bylaws that govern recruiting activities (see applicable NCAA Bylaws 11 and 13). Monitoring the recruitment of prospective student-athletes is the responsibility of the head coach and the Compliance Office. The Compliance Office will conduct monthly checks of recruiting documentation.
Prospective Student-Athletes
A prospective student-athlete (PSA) is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete, if the institution provides such an individual (or the individual’s relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students generally. An individual remains a prospective student-athlete until one of the following occurs (whichever occurs earlier):
a) The individual officially registers and enrolls in a minimum full-time program of studies and attends classes in any term of a four-year collegiate institution’s regular academic year (excluding summer); or
b) The individual participates in a regular-squad practice or competition at a four-year collegiate institution.
Permissible Recruiters
Prior to engaging in any off-campus recruiting activities, any coach recruiting on behalf of D’Youville is required to complete the NCAA Learning Modules for Recruiting annually.
Non-Permissible Recruiters
Contact by a representative of an institution’s athletics interests is prohibited, along with contact by an unauthorized athletics department staff member. An institution’s staff member may not pay costs for an athletics talent scout or representative of its athletics interests to study or recruit a PSA.
Recruiting Contacts & Evaluations
Coaches are required to abide by NCAA rules and regulations when recruiting. Coaches are permitted to contact prospective student-athletes by telephone and/or in-person, off-campus starting June 15 prior to the start of a prospective student-athlete's junior year of high school. There is no limitation to the number of in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts made to a prospective student-athlete. There are specific contact and evaluation periods that coaches must abide by; however, recruiting calendars vary by sport.
Any recruitment of prospective student-athletes using printed recruiting materials and electronic media (including emails and text messages) cannot be sent before June 15 immediately preceding the prospects junior year of high school. There is no limit on the number of correspondence between the coach and prospective student-athlete; however, all exchanges must be done privately.
Prospective student-athletes, their parent/guardians, and their coaches are encouraged to reach out to coaches at D’Youville University to express the individual's interest in D’Youville University and participating in intercollegiate athletics. However, any contact made regarding athletic recruitment should be limited to the college coach. All boosters, alumni, friends and other "representatives of athletic interests" who are not employed by the institution are prohibited from contacting a prospective student-athlete or his or her family with the purpose of encouraging the prospect to participate in intercollegiate athletics at D’Youville University. It is also prohibited for the prospective student-athlete and/or their parents/legal guardians to accept any extra benefits from someone related to D’Youville University (including boosters and alumni). By accepting benefits, the prospective student-athlete is risking their eligibility to compete in intercollegiate athletics at D’Youville University.
Campus Visits
Prospective student-athletes can make unofficial visits to D’Youville University as frequently as desired. Coaches will help schedule your visit. All housing and travel expenses must be covered by the prospective student-athlete during an unofficial visit. However, the prospect may receive up to five complimentary admission tickets to an athletic event during an unofficial campus visit. During a prospects junior and senior year of high school, a D’Youville University coach may offer an official visit to campus. Prospective student-athletes are limited to one official visit with D’Youville University and five official college visits in total. During an official visit to D’Youville University the institution will potentially pay for expenses in part or in full. The coach will work to schedule the visit.
Recruitment Violation Penalties
NCAA Bylaw 13.01.5 states that "the recruitment of a student-athlete by a member institution or any representative of its athletics interests in violation of the Association's legislation, as acknowledged by the institution or established through the Association's enforcement procedures, shall result in the student-athlete becoming ineligible to represent that institution in intercollegiate athletics, unless otherwise specified." Prospective student-athletes are responsible for any involvement in recruiting violations.
