TONAWANDA, N.Y. — D'Youville lost to St. Thomas Aquinas 20-2 on Saturday in the programs inaugural season opener. D'Youville's points came on a safety in the fourth quarter after being held scoreless through the first three quarters. The defense recorded five sacks, forced four fumbles and recovered two, while the offense finished with 83 passing yards, three rushing yards and nine first downs.
D'Youville kept St. Thomas Aquinas off the scoreboard in the first quarter despite visitor drives of 52 and 58 yards, recovering two fumbles with
Taiveyon Jones (Syracuse, N.Y. / Cicero North Syracuse) and
Jerome Zaid Jr (Ravenna, OH / Ravenna). The defense also produced three sacks, including two involving Jones, while the Saints two full offensive possessions finished with drives of minus-13 and 3 yards in a scoreless quarter.
St. Thomas Aquinas outscored D'Youville 14-0 in the second quarter, converting a short field into a 2-yard touchdown run and adding a 60-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter. D'Youville committed two turnovers in the quarter and came up empty on drives that reached the St. Thomas Aquinas 19 and 40, though
Jayvon Johnson's (Rochester, N.Y. / James Monroe) 48-yard kickoff return gave D'Youville one of its best starting points.
St. Thomas Aquinas produced the third quarter's only points on a 30-yard touchdown pass at 3:06, and the blocked PAT left the quarter at 6-0. D'Youville's defense had
Daniel Weslowski's (Warwick, N.Y. / Burke Catholic) 9-yard sack and three stops on negative-yardage runs by
Unique Jackson (Rochester, N.Y. / Edison Career & Tech), while the offense reached the St. Thomas Aquinas 29 on its final possession after its first two drives each gained 3 yards.
D'Youville held St. Thomas Aquinas scoreless in the fourth quarter and got its points on a safety at 8:42, but the visitors kept D'Youville out of the end zone after Johnson's 48-yard kickoff return set up a drive at the St. Thomas Aquinas 27. St. Thomas Aquinas added an interception and two sacks, and the 2-0 fourth quarter left D'Youville with a 20-2 final loss.
Wesley Farley (Avon, N.Y. / Avon) rushed 12 times for 31 yards and added five receptions for 10 yards. Jackson led D'Youville with eight tackles.
Raynard Bullock Jr. (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) recorded seven tackles and forced a fumble. Jones added six tackles and recovered a fumble.
