VIERA, Fla. — D'Youville University faced two tough opponents over the weekend, falling to Thomas More 3-2 and losing to Concordia University, St. Paul 10-2 at the Space Coast Complex.
In the first game against Thomas More, D'Youville (4-3) recorded a total of five hits, highlighted by a home run, but Thomas More (5-6) secured the victory with a run in the final inning.
Shannon Howes (Palgrave, ontario / St. Thomas Aquinas) led off the first inning with a single and stole second, allowing
Summer Clark (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville East) to ground out to shortstop and bring Howes home for the game's first run. Thomas More quickly responded, tying the score at 1-1 by the end of the inning. The second inning saw Thomas More take the lead with a single, making it 2-1.
D'Youville evened the score in the sixth inning when
Jorja Sandilands (Brooklin, Ontario / Brooklin) homered to left center, tying the game at 2-2. However, in the bottom of the seventh inning, Thomas More managed to score an unearned run, securing a 3-2 victory over D'Youville.
Summer Clark pitched the complete game, allowing seven hits and two earned runs while striking out seven batters, but was credited with the loss, bringing her season record to 4-1.
Jorja Sandilands had a standout performance with a home run and one RBI, contributing to an impressive OPS of 2.667.
Annie Jorgenson (Victoria, B.C. / Belmont SS) showcased her defensive skills with four assists, while
Shannon Howes made an impact with a hit, a run scored, and a stolen base.
In the second game against Concordia-St. Paul, D'Youville (4-4) managed nine hits, including a triple, but could not keep pace with the Bears (9-10), who tallied 15 hits and three doubles in the victory. The Bears took an early lead in the first inning after scoring on an RBI single to make the game 1-0. D'Youville responded in the third inning with a series of hits.
Summer Clark singled, followed by
Annie Jorgenson, who advanced Clark.
Jorja Sandilands then hit an RBI single down the left field line, bringing Clark home and leveling the score momentarily. However, the Bears added two more runs, moving the score to 3-1 by the end of the inning.
Concordia-St. Paul extended its lead in the fourth inning with a three-RBI double, increasing the gap to 6-1. D'Youville attempted to close the gap in the fifth inning when Jorgenson tripled and scored on
Isabella Mancino's (Wynantskill, N.Y. / Averill Park) RBI single, bringing the score to 6-2. However, the Bears retaliated with three additional runs, finishing the fifth inning with a 9-2 advantage. In the sixth inning, Concordia-St. Paul added another run to secure their lead, concluding the game with a 10-2 victory.
Kendal Lehnen (Sherrill, N.Y. / Vernon Verona Sherrill) started the game for D'Youville, pitching 3 innings and allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits, striking out one and walking one.
Hadley Donnelly (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa) followed in relief, contributing 2 innings but conceding 6 runs, 4 of which were earned, on 6 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout.
Mikayla Hussar (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca West) made a brief appearance, facing four batters allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits and a walk.
