ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Making the short trip eat on the I-90, the D'Youville University field hockey team fell to Roberts Wesleyan University Wednesday evening by a score of 1-0.
The first quarter commenced with goalkeeper
Sarah Reifsnyder, securing the net against early pressure from Roberts Wesleyan. Reifsnyder made crucial saves, notably stopping a shot in the second minute and another in the 13th minute. Despite several penalty corners awarded to the Redhawks, the Saints' defense maintained a solid stance, preventing any goals. The quarter concluded with neither team finding the back of the net, keeping the score at 0-0.
DYU stifled RWU's offensive efforts early in the second quarter, highlighted by a crucial save from Reifsnyder off a shot following a penalty corner. D'Youville then shifted momentum, earning a penalty corner executed by
Chloe Burkhard, leading to successive shots by
Erica Prible and
Meeah Wegrzynowski, both saved by Roberts Wesleyan. The quarter concluded with both defenses holding firm, ending with no change in the score.
Roberts Wesleyan initiated a strong offensive push during the third quarter, but D'Youville's defense, anchored by Reifsnyder, was resilient. Reifsnyder made multiple saves, including crucial stops against the Redhawks, maintaining a tight defensive stand. Despite the defensive effort, the Redhawks broke through at the 40 minute mark, giving them a 1-0 lead. The quarter concluded with D'Youville trailing but maintaining pressure, looking to even the score. As the quarter ended, the scoreboard stood at 1-0 in favor of Roberts Wesleyan.
The fourth quarter began with D'Youville maintaining a strong defensive stance, highlighted by critical saves from goalkeeper Reifsnyder. Her efforts were supported by defensive saves from Burkhard and
Addyson Trimbell, thwarting multiple attempts by Roberts Wesleyan. Despite the pressure from the home team, D'Youville's defense held firm, preventing any scoring in the quarter. The quarter closed with D'Youville successfully keeping the Redhawks at bay, maintaining the score at 0-0 for the quarter.
Reifsnyder recorded 13 saves, including six in the third quarter. Trimbell contributed defensively with a key defensive save. Burkhard also made a defensive save to keep the opposition at bay. Wegrzynowski finished the match with a shot on goal, creating one of the team's few offensive opportunities.
