PAINESVILLE, OH – The D'Youville University Softball team brought the bats out today in their doubleheader sweep. The Saints notched 12 hits in game one, defeating the Storm 8-7. D'Youville carried their momentum into game two as they recorded 18 hits across five innings to defeat Lake Erie 15-1.
D'Youville University 8 at Lake Erie College 7 – Game One
The Saints offense got out to a fast start after
Emily Przybysz (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier Central) and
Gianna Adamo (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) quickly got on base. A single from
Annie Jorgenson (Victoria, BC, Canada / Belmont SS) put the ball in play to score Przybysz and a single from
Gabby Moreno (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Buena Vista) scored Adamo to put the Saints up 2-0. The Lake Erie Storm got one run back in the bottom of the first, but back-to-back strikeouts from
Sarah Parzych (Getzville, N.Y. / Williamsville North) shut down the Storm offense to hold D'Youville's lead.
D'Youville's offense picked back up in the top of the fourth as
Becca Sawyer (Courtice, Ontario, Canada / Holy Trinity Catholic SS) led off the inning with a double and
Isabella Mancino (Wynantskill, N.Y. / Averill Park) followed right behind with a double of her own to score Sawyer.
Gianna Adamo came up big with a single up the middle to score Mancino and put the Saints ahead 4-1. Lake Erie again got one run back in the bottom of the inning to bring the score to 4-2, but the Saints held on to their lead.
Annie Jorgenson led off the top of the fifth with a double to right field as
Ally Beardi (Buffalo, N.Y. / St. Mary's) took her place on second as the pinch runner. A single from
Laura Beck (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) moved Beardi to third and
Becca Sawyer put the ball in play on the right side to score Beardi and bring the Saints to a 5-2 lead.
Lake Erie gained back some momentum following a two-run homerun to bring the Storm within one, but
Kendal Lehnen (Sherrill, N.Y. / Vernon Verona Sherrill) came in as relief and delivered a big strikeout to shut the Lake Erie offense down.
D'Youville tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth after hits from
Sophia Arno (Clarence Center, N.Y. / The Brook Hill School), Przybysz, Adamo, and Moreno to bring the score to 8-4 in the Saints favor. Lake Erie rallied in the bottom of the seventh to score three runs, but Lehnen recorded the final out on a pop up and the Saints took game one 8-7.
D'Youville University 15 at Lake Erie College 1 – Game Two
The second game started much like the first with Przybysz and Adamo getting on base followed by a walk by
Annie Jorgenson to load the bases. A single from Moreno down the left field line scored two and a double from
Summer Clark (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville East) put the Saints ahead 3-0.
Laura Beck singled to knock in the Saints fourth run before the inning would come to an end.
Lake Erie got one run back off two hits in the top of the first to bring the score to 4-1. The Saints notched two more runs in the top of the third as
Shannon Howes (Palgrave, Ontario, Canada / St. Thomas Aquinas) and
Sophia Arno knocked singles to both sides of the field to each record an RBI.
D'Youville put the nail in the coffin in the top of the fourth inning as the offense exploded scoring seven runs to bring the score to 14-1. D'Youville combined for eight singles in the inning including two from
Gianna Adamo.
The Saints scored their final run in the top of the seventh as
Hailee Jenkins (Ontario, Canada / Fenelon Falls SS) led off the inning with a double and scored on a single through the left side from
Shannon Howes to bring the Saints to a 15-1 lead.
Summer Clark was dominant in the circle going the distance striking out four batters while allowing just one run in the 15-1 victory.
