Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – A pair of goals less than three minutes apart was the difference between Mercy and the D'Youville women's soccer team on Saturday as Mercy picked up the 2-1 win.
Claudia McKail scored from the penalty spot to open the scoring for Mercy (9-3-4, 8-1 ECC). It was the third goal of the season for McKail. Opponents are 2-for-3 on penalties against the Saints.
Less than three minutes later, in the 44th minute, Kayla Camacho converted a feed from Nikki Bermudez to make 2-0 in favor of the visitors. Camacho's tally was also her third of the season.
D'Youville (5-8-2, 2-5-2 ECC) was held without a shot in the opening in the first half and got its first shot from Noelle Coyle when the freshman had a shot blocked and then put the rebound wide in the 58th minute.
Mercy played a deliberate possession game, but D'Youville was able to stay between the ball and the goal and limited the Mavericks to only four shots in the game. The defensive effort kept the Saints within striking distance when freshman Jillian Bernas scored in the 88th minute. Bernas stole the ball from a Maverick defender then battled around two more defenders before scoring her fifth of the season.
The Saints regained possession with less than a minute to go, but an effort from a distance by Lauren Zwolenkiewicz was handled easily by Melissa Torres in the Mercy goal.
