Box Score Buffalo, NY - After over half an hour delay because of the weather, the D'Youville Women's Soccer Team defeated the visiting Alfred University 4-0 under the lights at the D'Youville Athletic Complex on Tuesday evening.
Sophomore Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) kicked off the scoring for the Spartans by scoring her team leading 4th goal of the season 24 minutes into the game off a beautiful through ball from junior Elizabeth Lyons (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster). With under 2 minutes left in the first half, Lyons buried her own goal opportunity coming off a cross by fellow junior Melissa LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East).
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Juda decided that one goal wasn't enough and added a second goal to her evening and a fifth goal to her season total, pushing the score to a 3-0 lead for D'Youville. The assist on Juda's goal went to sophomore Emily Carias (Eden, NY/Eden).
After an incredible penalty kick save by freshman goalkeeper Morgan Price (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten) and then another diving save off an Alfred University header, the Spartans pushed forward for one last attack.
Moving down the field like the flash of lightning that delayed the start of the game, Kassie Thoma (Alden, NY/Alden) sent a ball down the wing to junior Nicole LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East), who beat several Saxon defenders on her way to burying the ball in the back of the net. Nicole LaVere's goal, her second of the season, was scored with 2 seconds left on the clock, adding some icing on the cake for the Spartans.
Price made 4 saves, shutting out the Alfred University offense, including an incredible diving penalty kick save. In front of Price, stopping several threatening attacks, was the reliable back line of Amanda Drake (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham), Mallory Hojnacki (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart). The threesome has been dominate this season, allowing 2 goals in their last 6 games, 4 of which were shutouts.
The entire Spartan team showed why soccer is called the beautiful game with pinpoint passes, flashy footwork, well executed runs and winning nearly every 50-50 ball as they worked as a team and earned the victory.
The next game for the D'Youville Women's Soccer Team is Saturday, October 4th against conference opponent Pitt.-Greensburg. The game is at the D'Youville Athletic Complex, beginning at 2pm.
