Box Score Buffalo, NY - A rematch of last week's rivalry game between the D'Youville Women's Soccer Team and the Medaille Mavericks once again went the way of the of the Spartans as they defeated the Mavericks in the first round of the AMCC Playoffs by the score of 2-1.
Sophomore Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) continued to be the Achilles heel of the Medaille team as she netted her second goal in as many games to open up the scoring at All-High Stadium 33 minutes into the first half.
Under a minute before the half ended, fellow sophomore Rachel Hermanski (Buffalo, NY/Maryvale) scored on a deflection from a free kick to make the score 2-0 D'Youville. The assist on the goal came from the foot of, you guessed it, Terra Juda.
The Spartan defense held the Mavericks for most of the game until Medaille scored their first goal of the game with 7 minutes left in the game to cut D'Youville's lead in half. However, the goal was too little too late as the D'Youville Women's Soccer Team knocked off the 4 seeded Medaille Mavericks to advance to the semi-finals of the AMCC Playoffs by the final score of 2-1.
D'Youville's strong defense sealed the win for the team as junior goalkeeper Catie Geibner (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) made 6 saves on 5 shots in the wet conditions. Senior captain Mallory Hojnacki (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), junior Amanda Drake (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) and freshman Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart) played sound defense for the Spartans and contributed in a massive way to upsetting the Mavericks.
Sophomore Kassie Thoma (Alden, NY/Alden) tied for the team lead in shots on the D'Youville squad with 3, along with Juda. The team had an all-out attack Saturday evening, registering 20 shots with 7 of those shots being on goal.
The next game for the D'Youville Women's Soccer Team will be Wednesday, November 5th. The opponent and the place are yet to be determined.
