Box Score Buffalo, NY - Facing off against their cross town rival and with playoffs on the line, the D'Youville Women's Soccer Team came to play against the host Medaille College Mavericks and defeated them 1-0 to clinch a spot in the AMCC Playoffs.
After a scoreless first half, D'Youville came out in the second half with one goal on their mind: playoffs. With that motivation, it didn't take long for the Spartans to break the scoreless tie. Leading goal scorer sophomore Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scored just 7 minutes into the second half. The assist on the goal came from junior Elizabeth Lyons (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster).
Juda's goal was all the Spartans needed as Catie Giebner (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) earned the shutout, stopping all 6 of the Mavericks' shots on goals. The defense led by senior captain Mallory Hojnacki (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) helped stop the Medaille attacks.
The D'Youville offense put pressure on the Maverick defense by totaling 12 shots, with 10 of which being on goal. Junior Melissa LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East) led the team with 4 shots. LaVere tied with sophomore Kassie Thoma (Alden, NY/Alden) for the team lead in shots on goal with 3. Sophomore Emily Carias (Eden, NY/Eden) chipped in with 2 shots, both on goal.
The D'Youville Women's Soccer Team will look to take another game from the Medaille Mavericks as they play again on Saturday, November 1st at 6pm for the first round of the AMCC Playoffs. The game will be played at All-High Stadium.
