Box Score Buffalo, NY-Before the start of the match versus Medaille College the seniors on the D'Youville College women's soccer team were honored. But it was a freshman and pair of sophomore sisters that scored the goals powering D'Youville to 3-1 win over their local rival.
Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) opened the game's scoring in the 23rd minute by taking a Danielle Gehen (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) crossing pass and putting past the Maverick goalkeeper. It was Juda's fifth goal of the season.
The game remained tight until sophomore Nicole LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East) drilled a shot from inside the penalty area in the 53rd minute. The goal was her sixth of the season and third-straight game with a marker.
The comfort of a two goal lasted thirty-eight seconds when Medaille halved the deficit. The Mavericks had the better of play for a time after that goal.
The Spartans put the game away in the 83rd minute when Melissa LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East) took a throw in from Ashley Long (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and put a low shot inside the right goal post.
Before the game, the team's four seniors were honored. Gehen, Shannon Wilson (Tonawanda, NY/Holy Angels Academy), Christina Ventresca (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), and Colleen Wiechec (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) are the winningest senior class in program history with 38 wins to their credit.
D'Youville improves to 8-4-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the AMCC.
The next contest for the Spartans is October 19 versus Franciscan University. Start time at the Riverside Athletic Complex (51 Ontario St.; Buffalo) is 7:00 p.m.
